LUCID registration, step by step

How a company outside Germany registers in the German packaging register LUCID and names its authorised representative: each screen, the two time limits, and what to enter when you have no tax number yet.

Checked: 7 October 2026 — the date every statement on this page was checked against the sources below.

Quick answer

Registration is free, online, and takes one sitting. You create a login as a producer, activate it within 24 hours, then have seven days to enter your details and submit. A company based outside Germany cannot finish without naming an authorised representative, so have your representative's LUCID ID ready before you start. Your registration number, DE followed by 13 digits, arrives by email a few minutes after you submit.

Before you start

You need four things: your company name exactly as it appears in your national company register, the name of the person in charge (for example your managing director), a contact person with an email address, and your VAT number. You also need the LUCID ID of your authorised representative. Search by the ID rather than the name: it is unique, so you cannot pick the wrong company.

The law keeps this one step with you. A representative, a marketplace or an agency cannot register on your behalf; they can only tell you what to enter.

If you are not registered yet

  1. Go to lucid.verpackungsregister.org, switch the language to English, and create a login as a producer.
  2. Open the activation email and click the link within 24 hours. The link works once. If the email does not arrive, check your spam folder and search your inbox for "Packaging Register".
  3. You then have seven days to finish. Enter your master data, add your packaging types and add your brand names. For packaging with no brand on it, use your company name as the brand.
  4. In the master data, under Authorised representative, enter your representative's LUCID ID.
  5. Submit. A few minutes later the register emails you its decision and your registration number: DE followed by 13 digits. It is also shown on your LUCID dashboard.

If you already have a LUCID number

Nothing is re-registered and your number stays the same. You only add the representative.

  1. Sign in and open the Authorised representative tile on your dashboard, then click Edit.
  2. Click Appoint an authorised representative and enter the representative's LUCID ID.
  3. Scroll to Declarations, tick the boxes and click Submit request.

The representative then confirms the appointment on its side. You receive an email from LUCID, and the representative appears in your entry in the public register.

No tax number yet?

If you have applied for a VAT number and are still waiting, click the green text inside the VAT number field, choose Other as the type, and enter "No tax number yet". Add the real number to your master data as soon as you have it. If you have both a VAT number and a national tax number, enter the VAT number.

What comes after registration

Registration alone does not make you compliant. Your packaging also has to be licensed with a dual system and your volumes reported, which is what your representative does for you. Next: work out your packaging weights, then enter your number on each marketplace you sell on.

Selling into Germany from abroad?

The new EU packaging law (PPWR) has applied since 12 August 2026. Four questions tell you whether it makes you appoint a representative in Germany — including when it does not.
